| We love staying here! Pam and Steve are terrific hosts and Steve is also an excellent guide. If you want to experience the amazing Nipissing walleye, pike, musky and bass fishery, this is definitely the place to be. Our largest musky and some of our best pike and walleye have come from the South River area of Lake Nipissing while staying at The South River Resort. Always a great experience and a fantastic place if you're a multi-species angler. Check out their website: South River Resort |
Fishing the shoals around South Bay in the Fall produces some amazing results for both pike and musky. Our best musky was a fat 53 incher that still stands as our largest musky to date.
The same areas and patterns fished for musky also produce big pike. Here is Bill with a 42" 24 pound northern. Another record for the show that stood until our recent trip to Saskatchewan.
When most people think of Lake Nipissing they think of the excellent walleye fishing. Nipissing has always been very good to us in this regard throughout the seasons.
Although the average fish are around the 3 pound range it is not uncommon to catch a few that reach six and seven pounds.
Bill with another large walleye caught on a simple 3/8 oz pink jig with a leech trailing. Starting on shoal tops and working our way down as the day progressed produced some great results using this bait.
The winter season has also been very productive and very comfortable when fishing from the South River Resort ice bungalows. Walleye, pike, perch, whitefish and white bass are common catches.
The shoals and shorelines are also great areas for big smallmouth bass. Jigs and drop shotted shiner soft plastics work really well for the smallies.
The catch before the storm. Being a shallow lake, the surface can get rough with approaching storms like the one brewing behind me in this shot.
It would be wrong to talk about Lake Nipissing fishing without mentioning the 'incidentals'.
Whether you love 'em or hate 'em (and we love catching them!) there's no denying that pound for pound, sheepshead are one of the best fighting freshwater fish around!
